I guess I fall on the other side of the fence here. Player characters in combat actively defend as well as attack and various combat maneuvers are offered to create a more realistic feel to the hostile encounter.

I got mine at a convention from the discount bin, so I’m not worried about it, I prefer reading rule books to novels anyways. Each book features 3 new clerics and a wealth of supplemental game info. There’s a learning curve, but in my opinion it’s a learning curve that’s well worth the end result.
Plus those books are freaking expensive! After all, it’s intentionally a parody. Isle of Death T I do recommend to you, though, the Kingdoms of Kalamar setting, if only as a very excellent campaign world that learned a great deal from Greyhawk and is, if I’m allowed to gush just a little, a spiritual successor to the style of Gygax’s Greyhawk with a little of Forgotten Realm’s style thrown in. Looking through the Hackmaster Basic rp that was posted, it doesn’t seem like it has cleaned itself up to not still be a giant pain in the ass to run.
The first rulebook for the new edition, HackMaster Basicwas sent out to preorderers on June 19, That freedom allows for a game where every new enemy feels like a unique encounter, it allows the environment to be taken into account far more easily, and is actually far more easy to run for the GM, as the uniqueness of enemies isn’t solely in their stat blocks or special abilities although many rpy do indeed have special abilities that you should watch out forbut also in the tactics they employ in battle.
Also rpt are a pantheon of gods and attendant rituals and spells for the cleric class to choose from.

Plus you have the security of continued support with a variety of pre-packaged adventure modules and a extensively detailed home world. Bought it when it came out, started to read it and zoned out. Gone are the days of waiting around for your ‘turn,’ of battling static opponents or of being anything but totally in charge of your own destiny.
And that, in a nutshell, is HackMaster Basic. Out of curiosity, how do you handle some of the things that require the GameMaster’s Guide that isn’t out yet? If I had as much time to spend playing or running campaigns as I’d like, it’s probably all I’d end up doing. Playing a thief or worse, a mage like a fighter just gets the character… and sometimes the party… killed. Don’t let the fact uackmaster it has a sense of humor about itself fool you.
So I believe that there’s quite a market for HackMaster out there. One man’s caviar is another man’s cat food, after all. That’s fair enough, but, as Hackmastrr say, I don’t think anyone can be faulted for assuming, based on its title and the cover illustration, that it’s more in the vein of Moldvay or Mentzer than it actually is or hackmastsr ever intended to be.
The hackmasteg gen system looks very complex. I honestly loved the ruleset from what I’ve read. As an aside I have to say the Otus artwork really grabs me. In 4th edition, the official setting of Hackmaster was Garweeze Wurld, a giant continent on the planet Aldrazar based on the notes of Jolly Blackburn. They just can’t get past rp humour.

I’m trying to get past that, to understand what makes this game interestingly different! The problem arises with, as I keep saying, the conjunction between the cover art and the word “basic,” which naturally conjures up very different expectations in people not already plugged into the HM community and the development of the 5th edition of the game.
You will havkmaster have enough building points to buy everything you want or even need.
